Defining the Gap: Competence vs. Capacity

In the landscape of executive recruitmentand professional development, we often obess over competence. We look at  CVs, certifications, and past project success. Yet, the gap between “capable of doing” and “capable of delivering consistently remains wide.

Competence is the baseline. It is the technical skill, the intellectual understanding, and the theoretical ability to perform a task. It is your toolkit.

Capacity, however, is the engine. It is the bandwidth to which you can deploy your competence

The 'Bottle' Analogy

Observe the bottle in the picture, each of different sizes.

The liquid inside is the same- the perfume, the wine, the water, the essense- is Competence. It can  be of the highest quality in all vessels. Nut no matter how premium the liquid is, the 250ml flask can never hold more than it’s volume.

To deliver more results, you don’t necessarily need “better” liquid; you need a larger container.
